Museum Exhibition Lighting Design
David has provided lighting design to well over 600 permanent, temporary and traveling exhibitions and has lit virtually all types of subject matter from Middle Ages Austrian Armour and Egyptian antiquities to Canadian Folk Art, personal artifacts of General George Washington, the works of Renoir and 300 year old Japanese kimonos.
His latest projects include completion on the recently opened "War and Medicine" exhibition, a co production of the Canadian War Museum, The Wellcome Collection - London and the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden. He as well has begun work on the lobby treatment and both the live theatre space and video taped theatre presentation for the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s upcoming exhibition "Dieux".
His design experience includes providing a complete creative concept and lighting design package for the French River Visitor's Centre working with both Expographiq Design and Toronto architects Phillip Beesley and Associates and Baird Sampson Neurt Ltd., as well as for the 22,000 square foot Canadian Children's Museum, the 9,000 square foot Canadian Postal Museum, and the 4,500 square foot Bank of Canada Currency Museum. He as well collaborated on the 25,000 square foot Canadian Canoe Museum.
Much of his temporary exhibition designs have been seen at The Canadian Museum of Civilization and The Canadian War Museum both of which continue to retain his design services, now for over fifteen years. In that time he has designed hundreds of in-house produced exhibits such as the Canadian War Museum’s “Canvas of War” which received the Canadian Museum’s Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Exhibitions category, as well as collaborative ones such as "Masters of the Plains" joining Russia’s Samara Regional Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, The Canadian War Museum’s inaugural art exhibition, "Art and War", between the British, Australian and Canadian National War Museums, and "Clash of Empires", between the Canadian War Museum and the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Centre.
He has also collaborated on exhibitions with leading Canadian design houses such as Reich and Petch, Expographiq, Lauren Kinsella Design and Associates, Atelier Amberbrook, and The Taylor Group.

On behalf of the Senator John Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh, Pa., I would like to congratulate you for your expert and highly successful lighting design for our major exhibition, "Clash of Empires: The War That Made Canada," Your lighting design brilliantly highlighted not only the exhibit's content, (10,000 sq. ft., 300 objects, 35 original artworks, 9 life-size figures), but guided visitors through the twists and turns of the French and Indian War. A wonderful achievement! David F. Halaas, Ph.D.
